WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

A Funeral Grant is a one-time lump sum payment made to assist with funeral expenses following the death of an insured person or a dependent of an insured person. The minimum contribution requirements must be satisfied for the grant to be payable.

The grant is available in respect of both the insured person and their eligible dependents, with the amount varying based on the relationship to the insured.

Grant amount definition: A Funeral Grant of $2,390.00 is payable upon the death of an insured person. Where the deceased is a dependent of an insured person, a grant of $1,550.00 is payable.

  • The deceased must have been an insured person or a dependent of an insured person
  • Minimum contribution requirements must be met
  • Death of an insured person: $2,390.00
  • Death of a dependent of an insured person: $1,550.00
  • Complete the Funeral Grant Form or Death Grant Form (as applicable)
  • Submit within 6 months of the date of death (can be extended to 12 months)
  • Submit through any NIB office

Required Documents

  • Completed Funeral Grant or Death Grant Form
  • Death certificate
  • Proof of funeral expenses (receipts)
  • National Insurance card of the deceased (or the insured person if claiming for a dependent)
  • Valid photo ID of the claimant
  • Proof of relationship to the deceased
